Capital

Jonathan Patterson, aka Capital, is a highly acclaimed performer and recording artist on classical and electric guitar. Currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music Studio/Jazz Guitar Department, Capital studies jazz privately with Frank Potenza and flamenco with Adam del Monte. He also teaches beginning guitar classes at USC and assists Adam del Monte in directing USC's World Guitar Ensemble.

In high school Capital participated in classical master classes with Benjamin Verdery and Manuel Lopez-Ramos, took first place in solo guitar in the Portland city regional and Oregon state classical competitions and was awarded the Louis Armstrong award for jazz performance. He also began composing, and as a senior studied 20th Century music with Vincent McDermott at Lewis and Clark College.

As an undergraduate, Capital attended the University of Southern California as an Interdisciplinary Studies major (focusing on music and Japanese studies), and spent his sophomore year abroad studying 20th Century composition with Jonathan Harvey and Michael Finnissey at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. After Sussex, Capital turned his focus to jazz and world music studies. He went abroad again and spent 6 months in intensive Japanese courses at Waseda University in Tokyo. During this time he became a student of Japanese classical music, and took private lessons on the koto, shamisen and shakuhachi.

He went on to attend UC Berkeley where he received his Master's Degree in Ethnomusicology. While living in Berkeley he met Japanese electronic artist Shing02, and the two began a collaboration of 10 studio recordings and 3 tours of Japan, including televised performances at Tokyo's legendary Liquid Room and the Fuji Rock Festival 2000.

As a classical guitarist, Capital became increasingly influenced by the Brazilian guitar music of Villa-Lobos and the contemporary guitarist/composer Guinga. While in California, Capital studied Brazilian guitar styles briefly with Paulo Bellinati and with Guinga, and then travelled to Brazil for further study with Guinga. Capital performed with Guinga in Rio de Janeiro in Oct. 2004. Soon after, Guinga composed in dedication the piece Capital, which was recorded by the great Brazilian classical guitarist Marcus Tardelli, and more recently by the composer himself.

From 2005-2008 Capital lived in Tokyo where he regularly performed Brazilian jazz and his own original music solo and in small ensemble groups.

He continues to collaborate with electronic musicians on original projects--most recently with DJ Nozawa, DJ Fencer and experimental electronic producer Cosiner. Capital is also a radio DJ on Fukui's JOLU 76.1 FM with a weekly comedy program in Japanese that he currently records in LA. To date Capital has been featured on over 20 commercially available recordings and he is continuously working on more.
